An exciting opportunity awaits at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Washington. We are seeking a passionate Human Rights Officer to advance our mission and promote global human rights initiatives. This post is located in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Washington, DC, USA. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Peace Missions Support Section (PMSS), and in close coordination with the OHCHR MSS Technical Advice and Assistance Team to the MSS (Multinational Security Support) mission in the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) Human Rights Service.

Responsibilities
- Contributes human rights expertise to the activities of the MSS Support Office and assists in implementing relevant parts of the human rights compliance mechanism of the MSS mission; contributes to strengthening collaboration on human rights between the MSS Support Office and the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations.
- Reviews, monitors and evaluates activities relating to the implementation of international human rights instruments, including decisions of the Security Council.
- Supports the work of treaty-established bodies and extra-conventional mechanisms and special procedures.
- Prepares relevant human rights parts of reports for the Security Council.
- Engage regularly with the MSS mission team, UN staff, government officials as well as Military and Police officers to plan projects and review project activities.

Requirements
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required.
- Experience in applying human rights in the context of security operations is desirable.
- Experience working with security forces including on doctrine and training is desirable.
- Experience with international or regional organization-led peace operations is desirable.
