Program Overview
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices.
Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.
This is a temporary position for a period of 6 months. This temporary position will support UNDRR in its technical role in establishing the Santiago Network secretariat. This position is in the Risk Knowledge, Monitoring and Capacity development Branch (RKB) in Geneva, Switzerland. The position will report to the Head of the UNDRR Bonn office with a second line of reporting to the Chief of the RKB Branch.

Responsibilities
- Within delegated authority, the Program Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- In the context of establishing the Santiago network secretariat, develops, implements and evaluates assigned programs/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes program/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
- Plans the Santiago Network Advisory Board meetings, and assists in developing workplans, ToRs and action plans.
- Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources to support the establishment of the OBNE (Organisations, Bodies, Networks, Experts) network of technical assistance and related programming requirements for the functioning of the Santiago Network secretariat.
- Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
- Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
- Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
- Coordinates activities related to budget funding (program/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work program, program budget, etc.).
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or related fields is required.
- A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or program management, administration or related area is required.
- At least five years of experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, loss and damage or related issues is required.
- Experience in a leading role in the organization of high-level conferences and workshops with the participation of Member States or government officials is desirable.
