About the Department
UN Geographical Information Systems Intern Vacancy in New York for 2025. The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) are integral components of the UN’s efforts to maintain international peace and security. The DPPA focuses primarily on the political dimensions of peacebuilding, offering strategic guidance and support for diplomatic initiatives, conflict prevention, and peace negotiations. Its mandate includes fostering political stability and addressing the root causes of conflict through dialogue and cooperation among member states.
Conversely, the DPO is responsible for the operational aspects of peacekeeping and peace enforcement. It manages UN peacekeeping missions, which are deployed to help countries navigate the transition from conflict to sustainable peace. The DPO ensures that peacekeeping operations are effectively planned, managed, and coordinated, aligning operational strategies with the overarching political framework established by the DPPA.
The shared structure of these two departments promotes a holistic approach to peace and security. By collaborating closely, they ensure that political strategies are informed by operational realities on the ground and that peacekeeping missions are aligned with political solutions. This synergy is vital for addressing complex crises in various regions, as it enhances the UN’s ability to mediate disputes and support post-conflict recovery.
Furthermore, both departments emphasize partnerships with regional organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders to bolster peacebuilding efforts. This collaborative framework enables a more comprehensive response to emerging challenges and fosters local ownership of peace initiatives. By leveraging their respective strengths, the DPPA and DPO work together to create a safer, more secure world, striving for lasting peace in regions plagued by conflict.Expected internship duration is 3 to 6 months. This is a job opening used to build a pool of qualified candidates and will be used to fill internship vacancies between 1 December 2024 and 31 December 2025.
