This position is located in the Western Africa Division of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA/DPO). The Political Affairs Officer reports to a Senior Political Affairs Officer, under the overall guidance of the Director for West Africa and the Sahel. The Division, which covers fifteen countries is tasked with political and regional work, providing backstopping to a special political mission, monitoring and reporting on major developments in the countries under its purview, and recommending actions for addressing the related challenges, risks and threats

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Monitors political, peace and security events in assigned countries in the West Africa and the Sahel region in order to provide early warning advice to senior UN officials; assesses national and regional trends which might affect the political situation in the countries within his/her purview or in West Africa and the Sahel, and intra-regional dynamics; recommends solutions/possible action by the United Nations.
- Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters and cross-cutting regional issues and makes recommendations on actions to take.
- Drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
- Prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high-profile matters of concern to the Department of Political Affairs as well as the General Assembly, Security Council, or other bodies, including contributions to reports of the Secretary-General.
- Provides support to mediation, conflict prevention and good offices missions and initiatives led by senior UN officials to the countries assigned in the West Africa and the Sahel region.
- Arranges and participates in technical, fact-finding, and assessment missions in assigned countries in West Africa and the Sahel, as relevant.
- Organizes, supports, or participates in inter-agency meetings and crisis mechanisms relevant to the countries assigned in West Africa and the Sahel.
- Participates in and prepares meetings of the Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and/or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG/ASG/Director with officials from countries under the purview of the Western Africa Division.
- Liaises with UN departments/agencies/funds/programmes, other international organizations and governments; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations.
- Provides inputs to Resident Coordinators and Peace and Development Advisers in assigned countries.
- Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, conflict resolution or related area is required.
- Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and related events is required.
- Experience working on political issues on or in West Africa or the Sahel is required.
- Experience providing backstopping support to a field operation at the international level in Africa is required.
- Experience in drafting analytical reports, talking points, background papers for senior officials is required.
- Experience in project development and management of extra-budgetary fund is required.
- Experience in inter-agency coordination at the international level within the UN system or similar international organization is desirable.
