The Office was established by Security Council resolution (SCR) 1888 (2009), one in a series of resolutions which recognized the detrimental impact that sexual violence in conflict has on communities and acknowledged that this crime undermines efforts to ensure peace and security and rebuild societies once a conflict has ended. The Special Representative serves as the United Nations’ spokesperson and political advocate on conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). This position is located within the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict [OSRSG-SVC] in New York. The intern will support the development and implementation of OSRSG-SVC communications strategy.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Web: Assist in researching, cataloguing and uploading documents in the digital library of the OSRSG-SVC website; assist in creating content and updating webpages.
  • Social Media: Draft and publish messages on X, Facebook, Instagram and Threads with appropriate tagging; assist in analytics.
  • Media Monitoring: perform the media monitoring twice a week to monitor the security, political, and humanitarian situation in specific countries of concern for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence.
  • Audio Visual: Provide support in creating visual communications, such as photos, short videos, infographics.
  • Events: assist in the planning of outreach activities around the organization of main events, such as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the Open Debate on CRSV, and other special events.
  • Attend relevant meetings and prepare meeting notes.
  • Perform any other tasks required by the supervisor.

Competencies

Professionalism: Ability to research and compile background materials, draft and edit written material in English. Ability to prioritize and manage time and resources efficiently and effectively. Familiarity in the use of various electronic resources on the internet, intranet and Content Management Systems (CMS). Ability to draft compelling social media messages. Ability to serve as note-taker at meetings and /or produce summary reports. Use of tact and ability to handle confidential information on sensitive political issues with due discretion. Awareness of the work of the United Nations including the Security Council and interest in conflict-affected countries. Technological awareness: keeps abreast of available technology; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings. Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme though any relevant academic and/or practical experience, in particular in the area of communications, public information, journalism, would be an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as Arabic, Spanish or French, is an advantage.
