Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of close to 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. This position is located at the IPBES Secretariat at the Bonn duty station in Germany.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, and the overall supervision of the IPBES Executive Secretary, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for providing technical support for the production by experts of IPBES assessments and will perform in particular, the following duties:
  • Contributes to coordinating the overall production of the assessments, including front matters, summary for policymakers, chapters, and back matters, in line with the Plenary approved process, timeline, and budget, as well as with relevant IPBES and UNEP rules and procedures;
  • Assists experts in delivering their work, including by compiling and editing material for the assessment drafts, or by responding to their requests (e.g., for literature, data, etc.);
  • Contributes to the organization, preparation and facilitation of assessment-related meetings, including author meetings, including by preparing documents and overseeing logistical aspects;
  • Contributes to the organization and support to internal and external review processes;
  • Prepares documents for meetings of the Plenary and of its subsidiary bodies;
  • Prepares, in coordination with the IPBES communications team, inputs for outreach and other communication material related to the assessment;
  • Works with the technical support units of IPBES task forces and assessments and contributes to ensuring consistency and harmonization across all IPBES assessments;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences, or a related field, is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degre.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences is required.
  • Experience in planning, designing, managing, implementing or evaluating scientific programmes and projects is required.
  • Relevant work experience with intergovernmental assessment processes at the interface of science and policy is desirable.
  • One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
  • NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
