Programme Overview
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is a global initiative that strives to contribute to peace and development through volunteerism. It was created in 1970 and is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNV programme promotes volunteerism as a means of civic engagement, social inclusion, and sustainable development. It mobilizes volunteers from all backgrounds, including professionals, retirees, and students, to work with United Nations agencies, governments, civil society organizations, and communities to address development challenges. The programme operates in over 130 countries and has a diverse range of volunteers working in areas such as education, health, peace-building, climate change, gender equality, and poverty reduction. UNV volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

UNV volunteers work in various capacities, including as advisors, project coordinators, researchers, trainers, and facilitators. They provide their expertise, skills, and experiences to support local efforts and strengthen the capacity of organizations and communities to address development issues. The UNV programme offers various volunteer modalities, including international and national UN volunteer assignments, online volunteering, and youth volunteering initiatives. It also promotes the recognition and integration of volunteerism in national policies and strategies. The programme works closely with its partners to ensure the well-being, safety, and security of its volunteers. It provides volunteers with pre-deployment training, ongoing support, and resources to help them in their assignments.
